So after over a year without writing anything at all, I suddenly find myself writing Lord of the Rings fanfic, and producing 10,000 words in just over 24 hours. How odd.

I was 9 when I had my first bout of obsession with this book, and 14 when I had my second, and by the biggest, bout. I've still got good friends today who I met through the Tolkien Society at university. Some years later, I discovered fanfic in other fandoms, but always declared that The Lord of the Rings was a fandom which I would never, ever write in, because the book felt too right as it was. Then the movies came out, and I loved them, and it allowed me to contemplate fanfic at last, because the movies themselves felt almost like an almost-AU almost-fanfic of the book. But, even so, I never got involved in the fandom. I read a bit of fanfic, but I had very strict rules about what I would read. (Canon compliant, no slash, and not even the sort of angst and h/c that I usually looked for in fanfic, which don't to me feel right for the characters and the style.) In time I moved on to other things.

And then, a few weeks ago, I started playing Lego Lord of the Rings on the XBox, and this of all things made me finally reread the book, and all those old childhood obsessions have come flooding back. And I'm writing! I have stories clamouring to come out! One story already finished, and another one almost done.

Now I've got to work out where on earth to post them...
